To the training and internship exchange

You should have at least language level B2 in German. B2 means that you understand complex texts and can communicate fluently.

  •  Comprehension: B2 speakers can understand the main content of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics and communicate spontaneously and fluently.
  • Application: This level is a prerequisite for many training occupations as it enables you to take part in technical discussions.
  • Improvement: To reach B2 level, active interaction with native speakers is particularly important in order to practise the language.

Dual vocational training combines theory at a vocational school and practice in the training company. You alternate regularly between the company and vocational school.

  • Responsible school: Your employer will give you information about the vocational school.
  • School registration: Your employer will take care of the registration.
  • Accommodation during school time: Many vocational schools offer accommodation such as the DEHOGA Campus or other halls of residence.
  • Costs: Your training company usually covers the accommodation costs, but private expenses may be incurred.

There are a large number of training occupations in Germany. You can start with a two-year apprenticeship and have the opportunity to acquire further qualifications after these two years.

Yes, there are support options. In Germany, there are programs such as assisted training (AsAFlex) and digital training support (digiAB) that help young people with additional challenges, including language barriers, to successfully complete their training.

During your apprenticeship in the hospitality industry, you can expect the following monthly salaries:

1st year of apprenticeship: EUR 1050, 2nd year of apprenticeship: EUR 1200, 3rd year of apprenticeship: EUR 1320

Requirements for a residence permit

To be able to work and train in Germany, you need a valid residence permit. There are two ways to obtain a residence permit for training:

Regular entry procedure:

1. You need a training contract, proof of your German language skills (at least B2), approval from the Federal Employment Agency and proof that your livelihood is secured.

2. Make an appointment with the German diplomatic mission in your country of origin to apply for your visa.

3. You must submit an application that includes the following documents:

  • Training contract
  • Proof of German language skills
  • Colored copy of your passport
  • Proof of your school-leaving certificate (with German translation)
  • Passport photo and application form from the German diplomatic mission abroad

Accelerated procedure by the employer:

1. The employer can carry out an accelerated procedure with the responsible immigration authority and makes an appointment.

2. The following documents are required:

  • Power of attorney
  • Colored copy of the passport
  • Training contract

3. Implementation: The procedure includes recognition by the IHK FOSA and approval by the Federal Employment Agency. After both institutions have given their approval, the trainee receives the preliminary approval for the visa.

4. Apply for a visa: After the preliminary approval, the visa can be applied for at the relevant consulate or embassy. After receiving the visa, you can enter Germany and apply for a residence permit at the German immigration authority.
